The Voice of Independent Grocers
A Message from CFIG President & CEO
It looks like Summer is finally here and I hope your customer’s carts are full of all the things Canadians like to enjoy with their family and friends over the summer months!
Thank you to those that were able to attend this year’s Grocery & Specialty Foods West Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver from April 20th -22nd. Both the size of our Trade Show and our attendance set all time records for this event. We had some outstanding presentations from Nielsen IQ’s Carman Allison, AI expert Dan Chuperkoff, IGD’s Stewart Samuel and Patrick Rodmell. We saw research-based presentations from FMS and Ensemble IQ and we also heard some differentiation strategies from CFIG member retailers, Calgary Co-op and Village Grocer. Eric Termuende spoke about attracting top talent and leaders from Vince’s Market and Stong’s Market shared how they are benefiting from Canada’s Grocery Code of Conduct. Retailers also discovered a tremendous amount of innovation on the trade show floor and in our Category Connect Business Meetings.
The Grocery Code of Conduct has been live since January 1st and now has over 200 members. The code board has transitioned from industry associations to members of the Code. Congratulations to CFIG members Giancarlo Trimachi from Vince’s Market and John Pritchett from Atlantic Grocery Distributors who have been elected to the Board of Directors. A special thank you to CFIG’s Gary Sands whose service on the board is now complete. If you haven’t signed up to the code yet and would like to learn more on how you can benefit from being a member, please reach out to the CFIG team.
The geopolitical landscape continues to be very dynamic, and consumers and business have both been hit with higher fuel and energy costs. While consumer Canadian patriotism continues, many consumers are also looking for value and innovation and have adopted additional savings strategies during their shopping excursions. There will be more consumer insights to share at Grocery Innovations Canada in Toronto from Oct 27th-28th.
Thank you for all that you do to provide outstanding service to the communities you serve!
I wish you a very warm and busy summer season.

Mike Dean Local Grocer Celebrates 50 years in Business
Mike Dean Local Grocer marked its 50th anniversary on May 11 in Chesterville, celebrating five decades since Mike Dean purchased Laflamme Grocery in 1976. More than 80 community members gathered that afternoon to congratulate the Dean family, enjoy refreshments.
The business has grown from a single store with one phone and a manual cash register to a multilocation independent grocery chain serving Eastern Ontario and supplying the Canadian north. Despite major technological and industry changes, the company remains committed to highquality food, strong community involvement, and supporting local producers.
A public celebration on June 16 at the Chesterville Legion, hosted by the Chesterville and District Historical Society, featuring presentations honouring the Dean family and the legacy of the business. CFIG was there to celebrate with the Mike Dean team. CFIG congratulates Gordon and Pamela on the 50 year milestone with many more years of success.

Congratulations to Rabba Fine Foods on 60 Years of Service
We at CFIG extend our warmest congratulations to Rabba Fine Foods and President Rick Rabba on achieving an incredible milestone—60 years in business.
Rabba Fine Foods opened its first store in 1967 on Toronto’s Queen Street. By 1980, with the launch of the Queen’s Quay location, Rabba began offering wider food selections tailored to the unique tastes of the communities they served. A new warehouse soon followed, and by the end of this exciting period, the company had grown to more than 10 locations. Their commitment to fresh produce became a defining promise—one that continues to guide the brand today.
From that single Queen Street store to a trusted neighbourhood staple, Rabba Fine Foods now proudly serves 37 communities across the GTA.
Congratulations once again to the entire Rabba team on six decades of dedication, growth, and community service. Here’s to many more years of success
